Anglo-Saxon/pre-christian Britain feminist mysticism with tightly plotted political intrigue, a deep and intense sense of place and time, beautifully woven together to give you a portrait of Hild (the real St Hilda) and her extraordinary life, how she navigates the complex politics of a royal court, her relationships with others and the amazing time of change she lived through.

The final quarter potentially moves slightly too quickly, after a wonderful slow unfolding in the previous three quarters, but that's just quibbling with an amazing novel.

I finished this book after like... four years? I kept bouncing off of it because the prose is dense and full of old non-English words—there's a glossary, but the Kindle version didn't handle that well.
But yeah! A really cool coming-of-age story about a tall, spooky disaster bisexual growing up at court in pre-England in the 600s. 10/10.
