I really did enjoy this duology and I wish I had read it so much earlier in my life. There’s just something so loving about Jace and Kazi’s relationship and how they would literally go to the ends of the earth for each other. I loved this series, I loved everything about Jace and Kazi. And the found family trope was soooo good!

Spoilers ahead:

Things I liked:
  • “He brushed aside my hair and kissed my neck. "But this isn't an end. It's just the begin-ning. I promise. After all we've been through, nothing can pull us apart. I'm afraid you're stuck with me now." I closed my eyes, breathing in his touch, his scent, and every word he spoke. I promise.”
  • “I love you with every breath I will ever breathe. I love you, Jase." "More than an orange?" he asked between kisses. "Let's not get carried away, Patrei."
  • "What about us, Jase? Will someone write down our story?" "What do you mean?" "Like the hundreds that are on the vault's walls, and the ones in your bookcases." An amused smile pulled at his mouth, as if it hadn't occurred to him and he was intrigued by the thought. "We will, Kazi. You and I. We'll write our own story. And it will take a thousand volumes. We have a lifetime ahead of us." "That's a lot of trees." He shrugged. "We own a mountainful, remember?" We. Everything was we now. We wove our dreams together like armor. Nothing could stop us now.”
  • “He circled his arm around my waist and gave me a bite of his apple, then kissed me, the sweet juice wet on our lips.”
  • Jase telling his siblings that Kazi is his wife after they left her to die
  • “What's wrong with getting married again? I would marry you a hundred times over.” She kissed me, berry juice still on her lips. “Only a hundred?” she asked. A thousand times. She pulled away, her brow raised, and she looked down at me, her interest suddenly roused. “Would there be feastcake each time?” “Mountains of it,” I promised.”
  • After Kazi is recused Jace’s mom calls her daughter. “She pulled back and cupped my face in her hands, her sapphire eyes  "My daughter." The word snatched away my thoughts and I couldn't speak.”
  • “She brought her face close to mine, our lips barely meeting. "It's real," I whispered. I felt something wet fall on my cheek. I reached up and brushed my thumb beneath her eye. "Kazi, it's all right. I promise it's real." I rolled to the side so that now she was lying beneath me. "You're here in the vault, with me, in my arms. We're together, and we will stay together, no matter what."
  • "I love you, Kazi of Brightmist, and I promise you, these will not be my last words. Or yours." He pressed his lips to mine, warm and full and true.”
  • Jase buried their sister beside their other sister like he promised (oof my heart)
  • “The walls and foor were dark, the way Kazi liked it, and I had the ceiling painted with constellations so there would always be stars above us.”
  • "Tell me the riddle again, Jase," I whispered. "You just want to make wrong guesses so you can kiss me." I clucked my tongue. "You're onto me, Patrei." He pulled me closer. "Happy to oblige, Ambassador," he said, and then whispered the riddle, his voice like a soft warm blanket around my shoulders. I was lost in its magic.”
  • Jase leaned over where I worked at the desk and swept my hair aside, kissing my neck. "I have a surprise for you when we get home." "Jase Ballenger, every day with you is a surprise." He peeked over my shoulder. "Getting it all down?" "Every word." "Good," he whispered. "We have a lot of shelves to fill."  I closed the book, stuffed it in my saddlebag, and we left to go home. Who will write our story, Jase? We will, Kazi. You and I will write our own story. And side by side, every day, that is what we do.”

A good follow up for Dance of Thieves. As with the first, the writing was engaging and easy to read, though I don’t know if the story will really stick for me.

Kazi and Jace were lovely, the most vibrant characters in the book (obviously.) I did genuinely enjoy their romance arc, though it did feel rushed. I do wish there was more of them at the ending, though. The plot was a bit less predictable than the first book, which I was also grateful for.

4 stars feels fair enough, because it was enjoyable enough of a read.
