Solid crime book. I did predict a lot of the twists though and idk the way everything came together felt a bit convoluted like there were a lot of moving parts. It was still compelling just not the strongest I’ve seen from this author.
3.4 stars
I didn't think I'd be able to stomach another story about the death of a teacher (or whoever) at a private boarding school full of rich brats + a teenager uncovering the mystery police could not.
Yet, having liked most of McManus's previous works (the last two not as much as the first two), I decided to push on and give it a go. I'm glad I did. I liked the main character Brynn (she is realistic) and adored her younger sister, which helped keep me reading--even if I was a little bored with the "mystery" I was curious to see if Brynn could repair damaged friendships and work up the nerve to pursue the guy she liked. I also couldn't get enough of her charming little sister Ellie.
I was also relieved this story didn't go down the same street these types of stories tend to down (e.g. pedophile teachers, secret affairs involving a student, blackmail or money things, A-list jocks getting away with things/being protected by the town, corrupted cops, or all of the above).
Bottom line: If you read often in this YA 'mystery' genre, you'll likely find this story rather refreshing. There are a number of "twists" and most of them I didn't see coming (or I guessed wrong).
SUMMARY: When Brynn was in 8th grade, her favorite teacher was killed. The crime is technically unsolved, but the police aren't still investigating. Brynn and her family relocated soon after but are now back, for her senior year. Brynn is also interning at Motive, a local true-crime podcast. She pitches the story about her teachers mysterious death and gets the green light from the show to pursue it. Brynn's investigation is the rest of the book: Brynn talking to people and uncovering facts or secrets people didn't tell the police 'back then' for their own selfish reasons or due to misunderstandings. Eventually Brynn figures out who the real killer was. (The podcast is barely even present in the storyline).
