This was a pretty solid read. I would have liked a little more depth but I like how it ended so openly.

Karen M. McManusin YA Neljä askelta murhaan (WSOY 2023, suom. Inka Parpola) on nopealukuinen, runsaskäänteinen mysteeri vailla raakaa kuvailua, siis juuri passeli kesädekkariksi sellaiselle lukijalle, joka haluaa lukea cozy crimea.
"Kannat aika monia salaisuuksia -- Ole varovainen. Sellainen voi pidemmän päälle kuluttaa" (s. 301)
Lukioikäisen Brynnin perhe joutuu muuttamaan takaisin kaupunkiin, josta he lähtivät neljä vuotta aiemmin. Brynnillä on huonoja muistoja koulusta, jonne palaa. Hänen paras ystävänsä Tripp oli katkaissut välit hyvin julkisella ja valheellisella tavalla, eikä sellaista voi helposti unohtaa, saati antaa anteeksi. Brynn hakee harjoittelijaksi true crime podcastiin esittelemällä kotikaupunkiaan vuosia aiemmin kohauttaneen kuolemantapauksen, jonka selvittäminen oli jäänyt kesken.
"Täällä on liikaa kasveja -- En pidä siitä. En ole tykännyt olla tällaisen vihreyden keskellä sitten sen päivän siellä metsässä." (s. 56)
Vanhojen, kaapin perälle haudattujen luurankojen penkominen päivänvaloon johtaa monenlaiseen kiemuraan Brynnin elämässä. Yhden niistä ollessa tiivis yhteistyö Trippin kanssa kuolleen opettajan muistoksi perustettavan puutarhan suunnitteluryhmässä. Brynn päättää käyttää tilannetta hyväkseen, olihan Tripp yksi niistä kolmesta, jotka ruumiin löysivät. Tapahtumia seurataan vuoroin Brynnin ja vuoroin Trippin näkökulmista, välillä ollaan myös Trippin neljän vuoden takaisissa muistoissa.

Brynnissä on paljon samaa kuin Pipissä, mutta Trippissä on enemmän ulottuvuuksia kuin Ravissa, joten kaksikon yhteentörmäyksistä oli kiehtovaa lukea. Loppuun, missä salaisuuden yksitellen paljastuvat olisin toivonut jotain vähän enemmän, koska tällaisenaan kirjassa oli hieman samea ja kiirehdityn oloinen finaali.

I have loved every one of McManus' books and this is no exception. The main character Brynn is flawed and grows through the plot. The other main character Tripp is also full of issues. All the characters are both likeable and not. They are like real people.
I am almost 50 years old, but I love reading about these high school kids in her books.
Brynn is moving back to her hometown that she left 4 years ago after her best friend humiliated her in gym class and then was part of a trio of students who found the dead body of a teacher in the woods. Now she is back and working for a true crime tv show. She starts gathering info about all the people who were involved in that dead body situation 4 years ago, and trying to find out why Tripp cut her off so publicly all those years ago.
The twists and turns are shocking. So many people could have been the murderer in the course of the story. Almost all of them, in fact. I really enjoyed it.

Only giving 3 stars because it kept me engaged, I guess but it was pretty boring. The end was underwhelming as well.
