A reread - I feel about it the way I feel about nearly all the Anne books that come after the perfectly wonderful first; they are charming, heartwarming, but lacking something that Montgomery captured with Anne of Green Gables. Anne really is in the background, and the doctor (call him Gilbert, please!) even more so, while little tales of their six children abound.

In Anne of Ingleside, L.M. Montgomery offers a warmly domestic continuation of Anne’s story, shifting the spotlight to her life as a mother of six and wife to Gilbert. Though Anne remains the heart of the narrative, much of the book drifts into the imaginative, often humorous inner worlds of her children, giving the novel a series-of-vignettes structure. There's a gentle rhythm to the storytelling, grounded in the everyday joys and minor heartaches of family life. What stands out most is how Anne has matured—still spirited and dreamy, but now layered with patience, quiet strength, and moments of vulnerability. Her fears about Gilbert's love fading reveal a touching insecurity that humanizes her and deepens our understanding of her as a wife, not just the girl we met at Green Gables. Meanwhile, the children—each with their own quirks and small dramas—are viewed with affection and realism, offering glimpses of the next generation's dreams and stumbles. While the novel lacks the plot-driven urgency of earlier books, it hums with nostalgia and the quiet beauty of long-settled love.

The book follows Anne as she journeys through motherhood - and she seems to love it too!
This story is less focused on Anne, and more focused on the adventures and troubles that her kids get themselves into.
I was frustrated that the main plot point emphasised in the book’s blurb is brought up too close to the end of the book and is, in my opinion, resolved too quickly.

This one felt all over the place. There were some really cute and relatable stories. But really, it felt like a book of vignettes more than it did a whole book. And the ending felt rushed.
