An absolutely devastating, gut-wrenching, & traumatizing trans story.

Be warned, it is absolutely riddled with very uncomfortable incest.

TW: *Graphic and on page depictions* Incest, Rape, SA, non-consensual sexual encounters, violent homophobia/transphobia, violent hateful depictions of extreme hateful religion, death, mourning a loved one

*not on page, but mentioned* transphobic lynching

  1. Erittäin kaunis kerronta
  2. Laaja kirjo erilaisia hahmoja, joista monet kuuluvat HLBTQ-yhteisöön
  3. Todella, todella, todella surullinen loppu

Kolme syytä miksi saatat olla pitämättä kirjasta:
  1. Insesti
  2. Asetelma, jossa seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjä ei hyväksytä
  3. Todella, todella, todella surullinen loppu

"En enää ole pahoilla mielin. Tällä puolella näkee, miten asiat etenevät. Synnyin ja kuolin. Palaan takaisin.
Olen näet jo elossa jossakin ajan virrassa."

I went into this book blind but pretty sure I’d love it. Love is the wrong word but it was very easy to get through  (wonderful formatting) and extremely well written. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time.

This is easily one of the most impactful books I’ve read in the last several months. Maybe the whole year. A story of identity, repression, family, grief, and all of the complexities of being human while navigating these themes, The Death of Vivek Oji is about more than just physical death. It is also about the death of how we might view people based on our expectations, and the beautiful juxtaposition against the birth of the person as they are.

Ever since this book came out all I've heard is people wahwahwah about the incest when there is a MUCH LARGER, MORE IMPORTANT THEME AND PLOT POINT to the story. AND!!! Emezi says the two books that inspired this one in the acknowledgements!!! They did the work for you and people still didn't get it!!!! You people make me sick. You lack media literacy, reading comprehension, AND critical thinking skills.

Akwaeke Emezi, the person that you are. You've done it yet again. I can't wait to read all their books. They are truly amazing.

In my notes I put Vivek was her grandma reincarnated. The grandma the baby. This may have been intentional but if it's not I'm saying it as fact!

A beautiful story about transness and queerness in Nigeria. Very sad and will probably make you cry.
