This is such a difficult book to rate. I did not enjoy the process of reading it even a little bit, because the writing style makes you really work to understand the story, and just when you feel like you’ve settled into the particular style, the author switches it up. While I didn’t like that from a reader perspective, I did appreciate from a writer perspective, because her execution here is no easy feat. Beyond the odd styling, I didn’t particularly like the characters at all times, nor did I feel like I really got the whole story this book is trying to tell.
All that said, I did find so many poignant views and lines on motherhood, postpartum depression and the way it affects us, those we love, and how we are able to love both. Those pieces really resonated with me. There were pieces of writing in here that were incredibly beautiful, and lines that I wanted to savor. Unfortunately, that was the minority of this book for me, so I just can’t give it a high rating. I do think I would try Soffer again because her writing seems pretty singular, but it would have to be the right story.

I could see why the writing style of this is a turn off for a lot of people. It was definitely a bit hard to follow for awhile (especially the strange middle part written from a completely different persons point of view)
That being said….this story was absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking. I am so lucky in my life to be in a long happy relationship just like Jane and Abe so it made me that much more sad imagining me and my love during my last days.
I also love the chapters from Central Park’s POV. The NYC imagery was fantastic.
Would I recommend this though? Probably not. Unless you want to cry hysterically and just be sad in general for awhile after reading it 😭

✨this was not the book for me. maybe it is for you! couldn’t be me, though. after the first several chapters in second POV i was over it. then there were the random chapters where you people watch in central park, which is a great idea to make this place a character in the story, but at least make the story interesting!!!
✨this was basically like the end of the notebook where the man retells his dying wife’s story but it’s also a blame game because he steps out on her and their son is a douche and it’s all because the wife had ppd. definitely a love story!!!!!
