I don't have a single complaint. Loved this story. Want the next book.

I read the first set of books in this series when they were originally released 20 years ago, so I came back to the series with both excitement and trepidation. I was 12 years old and new to big epic fantasy books back then. What if it didn't live up to my memories?

I tried to find a summary of the old books online and was disappointed that I couldn't. 20 years is a long time, and I only remember them in broad strokes. Unfortunately, this series was more connected than I expected it to be - it's "about" the children of the main characters from the second trilogy, but many of those beloved characters are POV characters in this, and important to the plot. I did feel like I picked up most of it as the book went on, but there were a few things I sort of wished I remembered better.

Other than that complaint, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were as vivid as I remembered and the world as interesting. Seeing the Renshai as a society made me feel a bit more that they are fundamentally broken and someone needs to give them all a giant hug, but they sure do make compelling characters! It's part of a series, and the book wraps up well while leaving enough threads for the next one.

Not a fan of the "we're not related so it's not incest" love story (BLEEECH if you grew up thinking you were related it's still gross!!!!) but loved everything else.
