Relationship of BFFs since birth Bina (reads biracial and female) and Austin (reads white and male) experience some growing pains during the summer between 7th and 8th grade when Austin goes to soccer camp for a month. Bina finds solace in binge watching a detective show for a while but is cut off from streaming services by parents (dad appears white, mom has brown skin) and focuses on playing her guitar and listening to new rock music. Bina also gets to know Austin's older sister, Charlie, a bit, and has some babysitting adventures with her. Bina's older brother and his husband adopt a baby, and Bina's other older sibling, Davey, is not gendered (broke up with someone named Yuki who is now dating someone named Philippe).
Nothing edgy.

What a nice book. It just felt so optimistic and hopeful! Not something you can always find from middle school realistic fiction!

An awesome graphic novel about staying friends with someone despite your differences and figuring out who you are. There was a lot of subtle diversity, which I loved! Fans of Raina Telgemeier would enjoy this graphic novel!

All Summer Long is the story of Bina as she learns to try new things and step outside of her comfort zone during her summer. As her friend leaves her for soccer camp, she feels abandoned and unsure of what to do with herself, but she starts to find out who she is as she's left behind, and meets new people that she may not have given a chance otherwise.

I really enjoyed the story here. I think it was a wonderfully relatable tale for youngster that are going into that awkward pre-pubescent phase of their lives. They're not kids anymore, and just on the cusp of being teenagers starting out fresh in high school. It's such a weird time for kids, and Hope Larson tells a story that illustrates what that's like in such a great way.

The characters were great and it strayed from conventional tropes that we see a lot of the time when it comes to stories revolving around young girls. I really appreciated that Bina wasn't super angsty and had ways to channel what she was going through (ie. her music and passion for music). She also didn't fall victim to a romance story and it was a refreshing story to read that was about friendship and really finding yourself at a tough age.

Excellent read!

I'm glad I read this in the summer, the peach/yellow illustrations give it a warm vibe and is really a perfect short summer read! The drama in this book is coming of age types of issues, where friendships can be strained as both people are trying to find themselves a little bit more.

If you enjoy Raina Telgemeier this is a type of book I would recommend trying out!

This was surprisingly good! ‘All Summer Long’ is about Bina, a 13 year old girl heading into her first summer without her best friend, Austin. She befriends his older sister briefly and plays a lot on her electric guitar.

I think this handled growing up so well! I love that Bina had found her “thing” and embraced it. I liked that she stood up for herself to Charlie and they made up at the end. I liked that Bina and Austin remained friends even when he got a girlfriend. It was a fantastic middle school summer story.
