I am in awe of Rachel Schade's ability to make a standalone pack a mean punch! This story had so much and never once felt like it was an overwhelming amount of info/world building!
I had previously stated that I knew one thing with absolute certainty was going to happen while reading FoBaP; I knew I was going to fall madly in love with the MMC, Garrick Darkgrove, because our girl is a master at writing those swoon worthy book bfs. One thing I completely forgot to consider was how terrifying and awful she makes her villains. Holy majoly, these two were cruel.
Honestly, this story is one of my favorite reads of the year and of life, it was that good (to me). Highly, highly recommend you pick up a copy of Fortress of Blood and Power

I’d been excited to read this book for a while and I finally got to it last week! It was a wonderful read ❤️
The MMC had me absolutely melting in my seat. The MFM was a suppressed girl who by the end learned to take her place in the world. There wasn’t any spice (depends on who you are if that’s a good thing or bad

Y'all, this was so freaking good. Schade does a fantastic job of telling the reader the difference between insta-attraction and insta-love. She wove a beautiful story of overcoming fears and coming into who you are meant to be and finding out you are stronger than you think. Character growth is hard in one book but Schade does it super well to where it's believable. I've got to say, she writes bad guys classicly well. They are BAD. I love the gothic/ dark vibes mixed with Mansfield Park (very loosely based!). I also love that she writes some STEAM with it still being closed door! I freaking love this series and can't wait to see the next two books!
4.5/5
Steamy story with lots of heart. I enjoyed the next addition in Schade's Fae of Brywilde series. If you are looking for a sweet, wintry story then check this one!
The characters:
Rachel did a wonderful job of creating characters that inspired really strong reactions, both good and bad. You wanted to root for Ren and Garrick. But, oof, this one had some characters that made me rage, like they were just evil. There were just some characters that were out to create challenges for our MCs. It was nice to be invested in these characters, both the good and bad. Plus, I love getting a secret cinnamon roll MMC. Just a little something extra.
The plot:
I loved the survival theme woven through the plot. Rachel did a wonderful job of weaving into what we already knew of Brytwilde, but adding new layers as our new MCs struggled against their demonic royalty and their tragic situations. The plot moved pretty swiftly and kept me plenty entertained.

I was able to get an eARC for my honest review. Oh I absolutely loved it, I was so happy when I was able to sit down and just devour the book in a day. Ren is so sweet and I loved seeing her come into herself and her power. I loved seeing the relationship build between the MFC and the MMC. I am also grateful that this was a standalone and greatly enjoyed it. Series are nice to see the world build, but honestly, I just grow tired of cliffhangers.
Florentia (our MC) has gotten used to being the town outcast ever since her stepfather died, leaving her in her half-brother’s care. But after a chance encounter with a mesmerizing and mysterious fae, when she unleashes the magic she didn't know she had everything in her life turns upside down. Abandoned and sacrificed to the fae royals, Ren must survive the cruel immortals and learn to wield her powers while trying her best to not fall for the handsome wolf shifter who always came to her rescue.
From the cover to the storyline everything about this book is perfect. Rachel made me fall in love with these characters and root for them, keeping me on the edge of my seat with the plot twists and revelations. The character arcs and her epic world building captured my attention and had me rooting for them throughout the entire book. Can't wait to read more of her work. Highly recommend you to give her books a try.
