i didn't finish the last 40 pages, but i'm still counting it as finished bc i read the ending in spark notes and it took me 3 weeks of my life.

i'm dnf it bc my eyes are glazing over the pages, and i just didn't vibe with it. all the characters sucked, and i know that was the point, but i think if i would have been rooting for someone it would have been easier to finish. also, many of the women in the story are treated awfully, and i also just didn't want to read that.

(review from august 2, 2021)

“Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice “

This line, this sentence, these very first words are from a book that enthralled me, made me shed a tear, left me dumbfounded, staring at the wall every time a chapter ended, and a book that changed how I see this world brimming with absurdity and at the same time sagacity which pulled me in deeper and deeper as I started flicking the pages from the beginning up to its last.

In this novel with a genre called magical realism, we follow the Buendia family, isolated from the world and their seven generations of suffering, chaotic histories, inexplicable occurrences, events tend to repeat in every generation and we follow the characters trying to escape the destructiveness of their own making. It is a piece of literature that is filled with rich symbolisms, that the repeating of names in the said family associates to the repetition of events in their lives.

This Nobel Prize winning masterpiece of Marquez taught me that life can be easy and intricate at the same time, that death is inevitable, that family and love go hand in hand, and that no matter how long it takes for us to wait, be it four years, eleven months and two days, the rain will eventually stop falling.
It is not an easy read. That’s what they say, and I can’t argue with that.

It was indeed very challenging and thought-provoking, making you feel like you are reading this book for literally a hundred years. But Marquez is a lyricist of language, he makes melodies out of melancholia and ecstasy, his writing captivated me page after page, savoring his use of words, leaving me in awe and admiration, and I could read this for a hundred years more.

“He really had been through death, but he had returned because he could not bear the solitude"

Did not finish. The repeated names were driving me crazy, and the "magical" aspect went one step too far when the dead came on a casual visit for a chat.

DID NOT FINISH: 51%

This book did not age well. Between the incest, pedophilia, and bestiality, I couldn’t continue.
