Finally.
We get the story from Cassie, Ky, AND Xander's point of view! Yay for Xander! :) Plus adding him in took out the confusion between the different viewpoints that the last book had for me.
Everything with Xander was amazing. Spoiler I didn't even mind the subplot with him and Lei, and I usually don't like it when the author drop in girls at the last minute for my guy. but I liked it this time. maybe it was how they actually bonded.
I liked how Cassia and Ky ended up together. By this book I didn't mind it anymore, even though Xander was still my favorite. (that's why I resisted Ky in the first book)
By this book I had grown to love all the characters, actually. Cassia and Ky especially, who had their ups and downs.
All in all, it was a very contrasting wild ride, but I enjoyed the Matched series very much.

All questions are answered in this finale (just not in as an exciting manner as I had hoped).

Matched is filled with Cassia and Ky in a secret and prohibited love, as well as her being drawn to her longtime friend, and designated match by the Society, Xander. There are instances of this love triangle in the third, but it is truly a story about being a part of change, never giving up, and doing what is right, even when you’d rather do what you want instead.
Reached revolves around our three heroes: Cassia, Ky, and Xander. When a deadly plague hits the Society causing its recipients to go still (not move, but are able to feel senses), the Rising brings in a cure. But when the virus mutates, leaving the Rising scrambling for another cure, the Pilot of the Rising must seek out Cassia, Ky, and Xander to help develop one.
I enjoyed how well-rounded the three main characters became. Having been separated from each other, they are free to grow into their own identities. Cassia, having been asked by the Rising to return to the Society, becomes a trader for the archivists. Once the plague hits the Society and the Rising swoop in with the cure, Cassia is left with more freedom. She realizes that people need a place to share what they have made. The Gallery becomes a place for people to showcase their work of writings, art, and even song. Ky is a major part of the Rising. He learns to become a pilot for the task of delivering the cure. He becomes extremely close to Indie, whom we met in Crossed. But he is still distrustful of the Rising and of the Pilot. Xander is asked to work within the Society and is able to help all those with the virus because of his immunity. He becomes devoted to his work, even considering not going with the Pilot to remain behind to take care of the still.
New characters are introduced in this last installment, including the mysterious Pilot, who is never described except as a male. We never find out exactly who he is, not even his real name. A part of me is a bit disappointed considering all three books speak of the legend of the Rising and it’s Pilot. Finding out who the Pilot is, if there is one, was a huge part of the suspense. We knew the Rising was coming, but WHO was going to lead it? However, I understand not giving real depth to the Pilot character. For one, the Pilot is being used by others to lead the Rising. And more importantly, Reached’s (and therefore Matched and Crossed) is not a story about a specific Pilot. The Pilot is all the characters who fight: for freedom, for love, for family, for the cure, for the Rising, for the Society, and for a different future.
Reached ends amicably for everyone. While some characters come together, others lose each other, and some die, it is the happiest of endings us fans could hope for. The ending also leaves the question of the future of the people up for grabs. Will they go back to what they know in the Society, will they trust the Pilot of the Rising to lead them in the right direction, or will they come together and for change?
I liked this book. It is my favorite of the three. I think that Condie did an excellent job with leading Cassia, Ky, and Xander through the different worlds of her imagination. Some things were left unsaid, I suppose she didn’t feel that they mattered to the story itself, but I think readers will feel somewhat complete after Reached. Leaving the ending open allows the individual reader to fantasize about what direction the people will chose to go, and the futures of our three heroes.
