This was a quick listen and I enjoyed the author's reading of the audiobook. I'm trying to think of things to say, but coming up short. Ultimately, there are lessons in identity and while there are plenty of sobering moments, there are also plenty of moments of joy and times to laugh along with Edgar.

**4ish stars but bumping the author since he went to my college!
i really enjoyed this read, especially as an audiobook since the author is also the narrator. he re-told his story in a vibrant and engaging way that kept me interested throughout. the themes that he brought up are important such as machismo culture, navigating family, impacts of bullying which can lead to internalized homophobia/toxicity, self expression, lasting impacts from Pulse, and more on the lived experiences for gay men
some parts felt redundant and other parts felt like he was just scraping the surface. i appreciated that he shared more context about certain past events but also thrown off

One of my favorite collection of creative non-fiction essays I've read this year. Smart, well-written and engages themes of Latinx masculinity and queerness alongside feelings of displacement, belonging, and working class struggles. What many collections wish to do Gomez does through heart and subverting reader's expectations.

3.99!! Very jealous of Edgar's writing. Witty, cohesive and his one liners at the end of each chapter were GOOD. I appreciated his honesty in his various experiences esp his perspective on the Pulse Nightclub and shooting. I imagine he dealt with survivor's guilt and could see that in the book. I wanted to hear more reflection on his experiences and felt like it could be a 5 star book if he had given the reader more of his internal thoughts. Overall, excited to read more of his work!!

Undeniably a gem in the continuing project of queer writing! Patching together reflections, confessions, and recollection of traumatic events in queer history, Gomez succeeds at writing with such narrative energy that keeps the reader immersed. From their experience of machismo to embracing femininity by stripping on stage, encounters with drag queens and in night clubs and more, the emotional depths and fluctuations manifested calls attention to the innate humanity of queer identity and desire. High-Risk Homosexual is one of those books that would make one more perceptive of the world that surrounds them.

Good read about what it’s like to be Latino man and gay. Author did good job of conveying how Latin culture is and its stereotypes. Good humor too

Gomez finds so much depth in small moments of life that speak to the greater experiences as a gay Latino. This memoir is now one of my all-time favorites. It's at once brilliant and heartbreaking, yet still easy to read and funny.
