4.8 stars! I ended up loving the magical realism. Her writing style from doing only short stories into this was a cool evolution as well. Highly recommend

The stream of consciousness approach to the narrative was an interesting writing style, but it was hard for me to settle into it for the first third of the book. The pacing was too slow for my taste, and I found very few of the characters to be likable enough for me to care all that much about what happened to them. It’s going to be the right fit for some readers, it just wasn’t for me.

The pacing here is is absolutely glacial. I don't mind a slow burn but this tested my patience.

The book had some really touching parts, and I enjoyed Susannah, Thomas, and Malo Mogge as characters. However the rest of the characters were markedly dislikable. The book could have been about half as long. It was repetitive, slow-paced, and at points I found myself actually getting upset at the author for the sheer number of characters she felt compelled to develop.
I caught on to the "twist" pretty early as well - that each of the characters who returned from the dead have a person in their lives who is not real. There were a few reasons why, but the main one is Rick and Morty Season 2 Episode 4 - where each character has "parasites" in their life that have implanted false but vivid memories in their brains to exist in the world.
Overall, this book was missable.
