I usually LOVE magical realism and I usually love the symbolism, the purple prose, and often (initially) unlikeable characters that invariably come with the genre. However, all three of those things fell flatter than a certain conspiracy theory for me and I couldn’t be bother wading through >600 pages of this. 
CW: ALSO, the Harry Potter reference by page 35 was the death knell for me. For a book published in 2024? For real? 🫠
