Solid, vibes, got the kind of fae type magic rules. Characters are at times a bit flat but I was still interested enough in the plot to see where it went through to the end

This took me forever to get though… and while reading and after finishing I really think it should have been titled ‘the book of loss’.  I had beef with most of the characters. Found myself confused with what was actually happening but then there was so much repetition in other parts. I will say I don’t think I’ve read another story like this! Starting it I was excited about the mystery element like okayyy so what happened? But after 625 pages I’m like girl we needed to wrap this up quicker.

Laura if I fucking find you I’m beating your ass! They called you a bitch! I’m gonna call you something worse! Think you’re better than literally everybody else and so hard on your sister! To the point of blaming her for something that YOU DID! Girl fuck you! Pissed me tf off.

Entertaining enough to keep reading but overall annoying characters and writing style.

This was a tough one. 3.5, although I waffled a lot between 3 and 4... but... I think if this book had been shorter, I'd have easily given it 5 stars.

It was good, the writing was excellent, it was creative and unique, magical enough just to keep me reading to find out how it was all going to work out. But by the end of the book, I was just ready for it to be over and was pretty done with spending time with the characters. None of them were particularly likeable (not sure they were meant to be) and that was fine for a while, but after 600 pages, they were getting a little tedious.

I also felt like the pacing could have been improved. There were parts of it that were REALLY good and held my attention, and I liked the short chapters, but when it got bogged down, it REALLY got bogged down. It definitely dragged on a bit too much. It could have easily been 200-250 pages shorter and been the same book but with less extraneous parts. It also did start to feel really repetitive at times, and I started feeling like, "Okay, I get it, move on."

It's also not exactly a happy book, although things to wrap up tidily enough... so there were some parts of it that I was a little unsatisfied with. Not enough to ever make me put it down or stop reading, but it certainly didn't leave me feeling warm and fuzzy, and I'm not sure how I felt about some of it.

If you like a long, meandering fantasy book with morally grey characters, go for it.
