OK, but not much too it - not much of a story, doesn't really advance the overall story.

Only 156 pages. In many ways it is better than a novel, as it has all the elements of her novels, but without the endless repetition & mind numbingly boring sex scenes (only one in this length!).

Although even in such a short piece there was still unnecessary repetition and the same old blah blah about Anita being bad, Anita doing anything for those she loves, Anita going to her dark place and on and on. By book 18 we know all that and it would be nice if some issues were discussed/examined or even resolved.

There was no mystery element (and not much of a plot). There was a shuffling of the harem (this seems to be one of her key elements now), Anita using her power in new ways (rather than just gaining new power. A bit of a twist – good!) and a return to more of a focus on Anita’s necromancy.

All in all, a nothing read. None of the past issues are raised or resolved (understandably for a story this size) but I don’t think lovers of the series will find anything to be too disappointed about, it is entertaining in its own way. It has a piece of action that will impact on later novels – so it shouldn’t really be skipped (although, the piece of action will probably be replayed in later novels, as Anita justifies, agonises, moralises, rationalises...).

The first three pages of the book were totally enjoyable -- a throwback to the Anita of old. A mysterious client wants to hire her to reanimate his dead wife. She gets into a debate on the ethics of zombie raising, and there are hints that "he.. will.. be.. back".

Then the door opens and she goes on a paragraph-long description of the hair of the guy (srsly LKH: what's your obsession with hair?). This nauseates me.

It's a tiny book, so perhaps I'll finish it. More likely I'll flip just to find out if there's resolution to this one and only hint at a plot.

*reread nov 2022*

Honestly my least fave of the rereads so far. The writing feels rushed. I have only read this once and didnt rate it then.

The background animator stuff was good but the main plot just felt garbled and after reading the afterword im not sure that for me the flirting incident translated well.

But it wasnt all bad. It was a quick read and i enjoyed the terrible contrast of the two animator cases a lot.

Flirt is a novella rather than a series installment. There is no subtlety to the plot or the characters but it was a quick, easy read. I'm looking forward to Bullet being more satisfying though.
I did enjoy Hamilton's discussion of the idea that led to the book.

Not really her best work. This seemed like a throw away book. Hope Bullet is better.

This is not my favorite Anita Blake book, but I'll take it. This book is unlike any of the other Anita books (with Micah maybe as the exception). Usually in the Anita world, there is always either police work or vampires/wereanimal politics. It was just a little strange to not have any of these. It is pretty much all about zombies.

I really liked how the story was told about how the book was written at the end. It is funny how the two different people could take the exact same real-life story and turn it into two completely different fictional stories.

Following LKH on Twitter has helped me understand her writing procedure better and I think it makes me anticipate and get more excited about the books coming out. Having the entire process in the back of this book has explained even further than she does in the blog and Twitter.

I will now attempt to wait patiently for Bullet to come out in June. How long do you think the patience will last?

Yet another Anita Blake book. I've read all the books in the series to this point. I have to say that the series has started going down hill and most of the books are just filler between sex scenes. Where has all the story gone. I don't know if I'll keep reading this series.

An interesting short story... or that's the way it came off. Not really sure I care for the two case opening since it doesn't really add anything to the story, maybe if there had been more possible cases that might have brought up the main conflict.
