Talk about a quick read, start to finish was maybe 4 hours. One thing I love about LKH books is that she drops you right into the story and you sit back and enjoy the roller coaster ride. I'm not sure whether this should be considered a sequential book in the AB series or more of an aside to explain how things developed.
So this was a very disappointing installment of Anita! I just didn't see the need for it nor for it to be a stand alone book. Had I paid full price for this hardback addition I would have asked for my money back..... The best part of the entire book was the beginning with Anita, Micah, Nathanial and Jason went to lunch.... the rest of it was just dumb......
As much as I enjoyed this book, it felt pushed. I felt the story could have been expanded quite a bit. For an Anita Blake book, it felt awfully short and had such an abrupt ending.
Great book, and that we got to see some of the insider stuff from Laurell K. Hamilton's writing process, and the comic at the end! Pretty nice and fun, though yeah, this story did take a dark turn!
This short story masquerading as a novel apparently exists as an excuse to publish fanfiction about an unremarkable event in the author's life. It was a boring scene. It became cringe-worthy when the author had to retell the actual event in her author's notes. And include comic illustrations from her friend. Maybe ... this belongs on a livejournal, not a published work?
Meanwhile, Anita crosses major, major lines as a character. The fact that she's now perfectly happy to commit mind rape, physical rape, magical enslavement and a particularly violent murder by magic without blinking was an enormous shift in Anita's moral lines. It went unremarked in the text.
These books are getting more awful by the installment, and yet I still keep reading the damn things. Every time I wonder why.

Not a very complex plot. An easy read. Fans of the series will love it for giving certain characters the spotlight.
Short but a pretty good and amusing read. Loved the personal touch from the author, too. And the cute little comic at the end.
I reread my original review and decided to reread this series and reevaluate my opinion. Thus, New Review: Coming Soon.
After so many books I'm terribly invested in all the characters in this series. While this was a shorter book like Micah was, it was definitely much better!!
It had mystery, danger, necromancy, love, and violence. All things I love...lol.
There wasn't all the unneeded sex that seemed to dominate some of the more recent books (although I don't really mind these, but some people do), only one sex scene, and it really fit with the plot.
All in all, I really enjoyed getting to spend time with my some of my favorite characters. Looking forward to Bullet.
Hamilton has also written a guide to how she came up with the idea for this book and a little peek into the mind of a writer, during the creative process, at the end of the book.
