This book is heartbreaking, in a slow and unusual way. The writing is beautiful, and though it felt pretty slow for the first half, I'm glad I read it. I think I'd recommend waiting to read the foreword until after you've finished the book.

"How the demonization of an entire race can take root in the most vulnerable"

Telling the story of Pecola and the characters around her, how the impact of racism causes broken families and shame.

It is an important and traumatizing story that confronts beauty standards, sexual trauma/violence, abuse and racism head on. Interspersed with outtakes of mid century children's books that further show the alienation between what White America viewed America as and the reality that Black and other marginalized group lived. How ignorance and supremacy wreck people, families and individuals.
