A “White Lotus” vacation gothic. The Pace family is going to Tuscany. And they’re staying in the local haunted house. Anna is the black sheep of the family; she’s a free spirit and an artist. The rest of the family prescribes to the American Dream.
I loved the clear writing and creative use of metaphor throughout the novel. Anna’s humor was another highlight.
The horrors that this book brings to light are more than just scary noises in the dark of night; they’re the everyday horrors of being gaslit, judged, and (how people perceive the) mentally ill. The whole story is a metaphor for mental illness/anxiety/neurodiversity.
I loved how things worked out in the end: Anna pits the ghosts against La Dama Bianca and she is stripped of her powers and locked in the tower. Anna then travels Italy and paints. I also really liked the choice to have Anna keep her distance from her manipulative, toxic family.

DID NOT FINISH: 67%

Anna meets up with her toxic family for a visit to Italy. They stay in a villa that is supposedly haunted. The locals say not to go into the tower, but Anna's brother insists, finds the key, and opens the door. Because of that they release some spirits. It goes downhill from there.
I didn't finish the book, because Anna and her family got out, and Anna went back to New York. Unfortunately the key to the Tower came with her, and I knew that she would have to go back and deal with it. I'm not really a huge fan of hauntings that follow people, and I don't have the energy for it. Maybe someday I will go back and finish.

I went into this book at first being a bit skeptical because the plot was not something I was deeply into from the description (the cover was what drew me in tbh), but I actually ended up enjoying it.

All the characters were a bit unlikable, even the main character, but the storytelling was what kept me going. Jennifer Thorne did a good job at writing horror with really interesting funny bits.

I borrowed this as an eBook from my local library through Libby.
