If I return to my five-star reads and find that I have forgotten the story, I drop it down to a four and add it to my re-read shelf. This is one of those five-star reads.

Was really looking forward to jumping back into this series as I had to take a year break from it but it definitely did not let me down.

Loved the characters (as always) and the plot. The pacing was a bit slow but that was to be expected as technically I have only read half of the third book since my book set has it divided into two parts. Definitely think the second part of this third book will be very intense and can see how. The war aftermath was fun to read, as was the plotting and scheming for what comes next.

I, of course, loved Tyrion Lannister and will defend him forever. If he dies, I genuinely think I might haunt Martin. Tyrion getting wed to Sansa Stark was such a big plot twist for me, and it happened so fast I literally did not have time to process. Jaime's pov was new and I really did love it. I felt sympathy for him at times and had to remind myself of what he is really like (as right now he is chained and bound so is not able to do much). Also, I am starting to grow fond of Brienne, although I have a suspicion that she will die soon. Davos is a mediocre character, but I am excited to see what he gets up too alongside Stannis Baratheon in the upcoming books. Melisandre can die and I would forget about it in the next 5 pages. Bran was a little boring at times, and I felt like his story was not moving along as much as I would have liked it to. I hope his plot progresses soon. Arya, I will always love. His pov always are so refreshing and fascinating to read and I cannot wait to see what happens to her next. Jon Snow is actually insane. His plot was so interesting, especially towards to end and I am curious to see what he does next. As for Dany, I sometimes forget about her and do not find her story very interesting, although I understand that Martin is setting up the story and I will probably love her when she begins fighting. The scene where she was trading one of her dragons for some eunuchs was genuinely so fun to read and it felt straight out of a movie (I literally could picture it so clearly, and cannot wait to see it in the show)

Excited for the next book!!

EDIT: A Storm of Swords pet two has made me realise I was far too generous with this star rating, so I’ve knocked it down from 4 stars to 3.

I started reading this series over 5 years ago and I only just finished book three - they're so long and there is so much too them that I get a bit intimidated by it. I decided that I should try listening to the audiobooks instead, so I downloaded A Storm of Swords to listen too whilst I was at work.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It took me a while to get used to the narrator, the voices he uses for a lot of the characters are a little odd, but once I got passed that I was really hooked. However, Part One definitely feels like a filler book to me. A lot of the characters are travelling for a lot of the story - Jamie and Brienne trying to get back to Kings Landing, Arya and Gendry trying to get to Riverrun, Bran and the others trying to get to the Wall, John and the Wildlings also trying to get to the Wall, etc. You get my point. There's a lot of moving around and small plot points that I assume will become a lot more relevant as you go through the books, but with nothing major really happening in this book it became a little repetitive in places.

Catelyns chapters were again my least favourite - everything about her is just so dull and I wish her chapters were instead from Robbs point of view, I still think that would have been a lot more interesting.

Having said that, I really enjoyed most of this book. Daenerys' chapters were all really interesting, as were Sansas and Tyrions. That was where a lot of the more interesting plot points seemed to occur and I always enjoyed those chapters when they showed up.

Again, Martins writing was great, I always really enjoy the way he writes, it helps me to keep interest in the less interesting portions of the book.

I've also seen the GOT TV show, so I have an idea of whats going to come up in A Storm of Swords part 2 which I'm very much looking forward too. I also realise that this has been more of a negative than a positive review of this book, but I did actually really enjoy it, and I hope it doesn't take me another two years to finish the next one!

This books series is so compelling to read. The Martin has a wonderful imagination, but can also create complex story lines. I love the world that he has creating and it's intriguing characters only make me want to read more!
