I liked Doug's approach to this book, the interview style. I felt like I gained greater insight into both Doug and Jane in this manner. Jane had lots of great stories to share which supported her answers to Doug. I had no idea she has kept herself so active, as if she has a full time job and on top of that, has to travel the world for her work. I enjoyed her thoughts and wisdom on the topic of hope. She has a comforting voice and is an eloquent speaker. Jane says we need to all do our bit for the environment, and we have a small window of time to do so, but every little bit helps, and everyone needs to do something.

This was a great book, very similar to The Book of Joy. I think Abrams does a great job interviewing wise elderly figures with respect and thoughtfulness. Jane Goodall is one of my personal heroes, and so I was excited to learn more about her perspective on hope. She is very hopeful! Jane has so much wisdom and love to share with others. I listened to the audiobook, which was great, but which meant that I listened on the go a lot. My most meaningful interactions with this book were when I gave it my full attention. In general, I loved the book, but the interview style made it choppy at times and hard to stick to. I completely understand why this method was chosen, and why it is a good option when working with elderly co authors, but it is slightly less "readable." I would recommend this book to environmentalists, and to anyone seeking hope.
I appreciated Jane Goodall's definition for hope, and how she maintains it while acknowledging reality. The audiobook was nice, like listening to Douglas Abrams interview Jane Goodall, and I appreciated both of their perspectives.
"A person either is or isn't an optimist. It's a disposition, or a philosophy of life. As an optimist, you can just have the feeling of "oh, it'll be alright." It's the opposite of a pessimist who says, "oh, that's never going to work."
Hope, on the other hand, is a stubborn determination to do all you can to MAKE it work. And hope is something we can cultivate."

I really like both of these authors and Jane Goodall is my hero. Listened to this as an audiobook, a conversation between friends. Love Jane's ability to tell stories and inspire.
