Interesting, but slow going and not super engaging.

Spies are awesome, I really enjoyed seeing what the "real" running of the double cross spies was like. Extreamly well researched, Macintyre does a great job of differentiating the spies, handlers, and managerial staff who could have become just a series of names. I also liked the sense of humor that broke the tension and encouraged us to laugh and some of the absurd situations. Spying, it turns out, is pretty hilarious.

A well written book of a relatively unknown bit of history about the double spies who put the pieces in place for the invasion of Normandy. An especially good audio.

Too many characters with not enough character development to keep them sorted. Pacing was too slow for me. Input it down after about 2.5 hours of reading.

Fantastic historical reconstruction of the genesis, elaboration, and eventual triumph of the Double Cross spy system in the UK during WWII. Macintyre develops each character using their words and diaries, their friends and enemies, and official archives, until you feel as though you were there.

Even learning about one of these stories would make the book worth it. It's packed with the kind of history that strains credulity. Also, really enjoyed some of the asides that the author put in here, like the fact that M16 always capitalized 'Lesbian' when they were referring to the behavior of the bisexual lady spy.
