Quite an interesting read, but for a book claiming it's about Propertius, there is actually very little about Propertius. For me, it felt like the writer wanted too much in too little space and throughout writing a book about Propertius, he suddenly realised that he wanted to write a book about love elegies/love stories in early Imperial Rome.

Also, describing Dido's suicide as "falling on Aeneas' phallic sword" is a bit excessive to my tastes...
