What a book. Erik Larson is so skilled at writing nonfiction that sometimes it hardly seems real- it's gripping and full of details that would probably otherwise have been passed over, enough that it's hard for me to want to put down one of his books once I start reading. Though this one doesn't grip me quite as much as his others (I once stayed up far past my bedtime to finish Dead Wake even though I knew what was likely going to happen), it's still a compelling read about human arrogance and overconfidence in the face of Mother Nature-something which almost never ends well. It's also a fascinating look into how hurricanes form and move in the first place, even if the scientific jargon gets a bit hard to read at times. Definitely worth a read if you want to find out more about meteorology in general.

Such a devastating storm. Glad they’ve gotten better at predicting and protecting since then.
The details swung from too much to too little. For example, there was a very detailed map, but when I tried to look up places in it, they often weren’t there. And many places on it didn’t seem to appear in the book.
Another example is giving a date trajectory map of the hurricane but then referring to the day of the week instead of the date.
Overall I enjoyed it and the window into early 1900s life.

The first 30-40% of this audio just dragged. And then just like a Category 4 hurricane, the paced picked up FAST.

This wasn't the best of books to read while also living through a time where man's arrogance leads to thousands of people dying, but it is a very well done and powerful book. The science discussions about the hurricane could have been clearer--some diagrams would have helped immensely--but otherwise a very enjoyable and interesting read.
