In What Moves the Dead, we met Alex Easton; retired sworn solider, Gallacian traveler, and loyal friend. Now, in What Feasts at Night, Easton returns home to Gallacia, to their family hunting lodge, as a favor to their loyal man Angus and Miss Potter, the mycologist and regal Englishwoman from the first book. Upon arrival, things are immediately not as expected. The caretaker is missing, the lodge is in disarray, and the villagers are whispering. Missing caretakers are one thing, but when the villagers start whispering, you know there’s trouble.

A breath-stealing monster is what has the villagers all atwitter and having just survived the horror that occurred at the Usher mansion, Alex isn’t quite so quick to write it off as superstition and gossip. Strange dreams begin to plague several of the inhabitants of the lodge, including Alex. What is plaguing the people in this small Gallacian village? Will Alex figure it out before someone dies?

You’ll have to read it to find out.

If you haven’t heard, I completely adore T. Kingfisher’s writing. Whether she is turning fairy tales on their head or reimaging classic literature, her books are always a good time. I was delighted to see there was another book featuring Alex Easton (and Angus! and Miss Potter!) and I am hopeful there will be more. Easton is a wry, sarcastic, loyal, and loving character; one I am so happy to have found. Kingfisher excels at the creepy, dark, and macabre. The Sworn Soldier series is not to be missed.
