So this was gonna go on my recommendations, but I had to read it first. This book was one of the best books about community created by trans women. Trans women are the most marginalized group in the world. The way we were able to see the world through the eyes of 3 trans women, I was blown away. One of my favorite things is how they did the reveal where Brooke came out to Abigail and the chapter about “Woodworking” and closeting yourself to survive. I had been kind of confused by how Brooke took Abigail under her care as a mom. But I didn’t think it would be as bad as expected. But the moment that Brooke’s chapter came up, I was like OH MY GOD WHAT A GREAT HUMAN STORY ABOUT WOMEN WHO ARE TRYING TO GET BY!!!! This is easily going on my top 10 books of all time! Brilliant work! I also love that Abigail is a shithead because that’s what makes her lovable

I’ve loved Emily St. James’ journalistic writing for a long time, so I knew her debut fiction novel would be great — but even still, it far surpassed my expectations. The story is laugh-out-loud funny, while still being a tale full of trauma, regret, fear, and the ugly reality of bigotry and hatred directed at trans people. The POV characters of Erica and Abigail, though both trans, explore and bring to life so many different aspects of trans identity while still being wholly unique people. Speaking of POV, the book weaves in and out of different character perspectives and types of POV (first person, third person and even second person) in such a brilliant way. Read this book!

Set around the 2016 election, a closeted trans woman seeks out the only other out trans woman in her conservative small town: her student.

Woodworking is about the stories of different trans women, their identity and transness and what it means to them. It's also about their loved ones, complicated relationships and the weight of secrets.

The twist did get to me.
