Compared to the other books in the series I felt that this one did not have as much Indigenous art. I was particularly disappointed that they had not done an Indigenous art form of a grizzly bear (there is a bear in The Sockeye Mother so yay!).

This is the second book by this pair. Each one highlights the Gitxsan’s way of knowing the world by showing the interconnectedness of culture and nature. In this instance, we learn about the grizzly’s behaviour as it pertains to certain times of the year. These times are connected to the Gitxzan calendar of moons.

Most of these words are explained in small text boxes on the same page. The back matter has additional information about the Gitxsan people with a chart of the different moons. It also shows a map of their unceded territory.
Natasha Donovan’s art is gorgeous. She illustrates the cultural relationship through the use of traditional art into the landscapes.

The Grizzly Mother is a great nature picture book for any child who has ever been interested in animals. The Gitxsan perspective on animals in their territory is one that deserves to be told and heard. This is a great follow up to The Sockeye Mother, which I also thought was a fabulous work of nature nonfiction for kids. The art is definitely on point, although Natasha Donovan's work has never let me down. Definitely recommended!
