DNF at 60 pages in.. it's been on my shelves since 2016 and now that I am cleaning out my shelves I felt I should pick it up, but perhaps I had intuited correctly this is not for me. I can tell Steinbeck is a great writer, and I really enjoyed the way he described the scenes in the valley, but I felt no connection at all to the main characters and the way he writes the women was grating to me. After reading some reviews I don't think I will very much enjoy the rest of the narrative or the biblical references so I will not plough through another 700 pages.

If I hadn't been reading this book for a book group I might've been tempted to set it down during the first half of the book. But when I reached the heart of the book--the discussion on "timshel"--I couldn't wait to see it resolve, which it did--beautifully!
