This is probably the best book from the trilogly (yes I know it's technically one book, please don't come for me Tolkein stans).

Might bump this up to 4.5 stars later, I still can't make up my mind šŸ˜…

Such a great end to a fantastic trilogy. Lotr has been so daunting to read, but after doing it I donā€™t know what I was scared of. (Yes I do, the size). I listened on audiobook the Robert Ingles version and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Frodo and Samā€™s endings make perfect sense for their characters and how they developed along the way. I could honestly say that about every single character. I will always love Merry and Pippin and SURPRISE they arenā€™t twins but they are cousins.

The writing of Gandalf as a mentor is so good I understand now why people love him so much. It is annoying at time when he leaves because as the reader you are like ā€œbro! You are leaving at the most random times!ā€ However, it is all in pursuit of the other characters growing and learning.

Favorite Quotes:
ā€œDead men are not friends to living men and give them no gifts

Wild men are wild, free but not children

And she spoke as one who did not like what was said

The houses of the dead are no place for the living

I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.ā€

So, I switched over to an audiobook version when I got about 100 or so pages into the irl book version and just couldnā€™t get through it.

Moving through the audio version, I still felt like it was quite a slog, especially the ending, which justā€¦ Keptā€¦ Goingā€¦

I honestly felt sort of disappointed by this book, especially because I am quite fond of the rest of the series and enjoyed reading them quite a lot. I just found this one to be way too dense for my own taste. Maybe itā€™s because I ended up listening to the unabridged version, because it was the only one available at my online library app šŸ¤·šŸ¼

In any case, not my favourite book in the series, and a bit of a let down.

Thoughts
I feel like I'm being harsh with this rating but I literally only really enjoyed the last 3 chapters. Which was a surprise and different from the movie.

My biggest issue with the start was the pacing. I felt like there plot could have been told in one chapter but instead the story just went on and on.

Sam is 1000%%% the best character in this series and Frodo does not deserve him.

The rest of the fellowships plots I feel were supposed to get their shining moments but I was just bored.

There was war and politics but not good politics because there wasn't enough depth to care.

I honestly just read this so the series could be done. It's not my favourite. I can see it's value but it's not for me. And that's okay.
