"Never mind. Let's just fight!" "I don't like where this is going..." (Pg 32)

I've heard a lot of good things about Fruits Basket so I thought I'd give it a try. It was way different than I expected.

Story-wise, it's compelling, deep, but horribly cliched. It uses old cliches from the '90s and creates new ones that other mangas use now. The release date of the first Japanese Fruits Basket, Vol 1, is in 1999, which doesn't surprise me at all, considering everything.

The story in this volume featured more character introductions, a few vacations, and a bit of life in their school. A lot of it was stupid but the way the author pulled you into the story really worked to make me interested. (TW: manipulation, blood, fights physically [off screen] and verbally [on screen])

I am not a huge fan of the characters.
• The main character Tohru Honda is quite annoying. She's super sweet but she's so much of an airhead that it's a major problem.

Then we get to the other two parts of the love triangle, Yuki "the Prince" and Kyo.
• Yuki is also annoying but the hints into his backstory in this volume make it a bit better/bearable.
• Kyo is probably my favorite character out of all of them but he still has aspects that I don't like. He's sweet but he yells a lot and it's so annoying. His backstory in this volume made him more interesting.

Everyone else is annoying and cliched. I don't get what's up with that girl who is obsessed with Kyo? And why everyone makes him spend time with this girl when he so clearly doesn't want to. I probably don't like everyone because they all are manipulative in some ways.

The art style is so iconic and straight from the 90s.

It features;
• sharp angles of the jaw
• pointy chins
• pointy noses
• thin long legs
• detailed hair,
• detailed huge eyes.

A problem about having nearly everyone with these features is that they all look either a) identical or, b)similar. I feel that it would be easier to tell everyone apart in the anime because a lot of the characters have different colored hair. The eyes are typically (not always) too far apart but it's bearable.

Honestly, the old art style was one of the most interesting parts of Fruits Basket. I liked the chibis/less detailed ones best. I also really liked the animals because they were drawn to be adorable which was delivered.

I will read the next couple volumes. If anything gets really annoying, I'll probably have to pause on this series for a while.

I’m still having a lot of fun with this series, but why is a mid 20’s man buying a sexy maid outfit he got from his friends adult store for a MINOR?? In fact, there were many jokes about those men being attracted to the younger girls and how they might end up in jail if they get too close to the school… we’re losing the plot here a little y’all. Those were more annoying than anything. Anyways, the emotional moments are so tender, but I’m scared for that akito guy like what is his deal??
