It was a heart wrenching book! I found myself not wanting to finish because my heart couldn't take the abuse....but them I had to finish to see what the end was gonna be. I have to say that I did NOT like the end, I thought it ended rather abruptly. Give that the author did an excellent job with character development and story telling, the ending definitely left me with questions.

There were many times I wanted to put this book down and not finish it. The brutality and abuse were hard to bear. And yet I felt compelled to read the entire thing. Too often we turn away from difficult stories because they disturb our peace. But when we do that, we miss the opportunity to see illustrations of human resilience. Tangy Mae never gave up on her dream of completing her education in spite of all the abuse and loss she experienced.

Very well written!

This is the saddest bleakest most depressing book I have ever read. The author is a good writer but the story is just unbearably brutal. I actually wouldn’t recommend this book.

This book was exceptionally good, so good that I couldn't put it down. The storyline is harrowing but nonetheless potentially factual. It takes place in the 1950s Jim Crow era of Georgia and follows a poor black family of 10. While racism is a continuous threat, it is the least of their worries as violence against ones life and soul comes mainly from within the home.
