This was one the saddest books i've read. The pain those children suffered was unbearable to read... Rozelle is definitely burning in hell for what she put them kids through.

Devastating read, yet I couldn’t put it down. My heart was in my throat for much of this book, but I cannot think of another book that so accurately describes how trauma is passed down through families. It was heart-wrenching and disturbing on so many levels. Brilliant in its description of white supremacist culture and its effects.

Spoiler Alert

Ok ok  IDK.

First and foremost well written and interesting story full of drama. The drama will keep you turning the page. However I was still bored. For me it was slow and long and then we have that damn mama.

Rozelle Quinn… Bat shit crazy! I didn’t think anyone could out crazy Emma Jean Peace (iykyk) but yea she did! The things she put her kids through… Verbal Abuse. Physical Abuse. Mental Abuse. Pimping. Killing. With absolutely NO remorse.

BUT…Miss Pearl said her friend did the best she knew how. That she was a young mother on her own, with no guidance, and was able to feed and keep all 9 of her children under one roof! And I tell ya…for a short moment Miss Pearl made me feel a tab bit of compassion for that woman. VERY SHORT. .5 seconds short.

The things those kids went through at the hands of their mother inside their home was worst than the racial tension they faced on the outside.  She ruined them and yet it ended and she was still horrible and and heartless. The thoughts I had were very…unchristian.

Moments that got reactions out of me…
- Leaving Edna saying that’s the only thing she has that belong to Frank. Well I be…
- Tangy Mae loving on Velman and then put her lips on that man. Well I be…lol
- Tangy Mae asking Crow “Did you screw her?! You know she got that clap! Well I be…

I would have given this 4.5 stars. I couldn't stop reading this book. I was drawn immediately to the characters.

Beneath the dark fog of Roselle's madness and the rough beginnings of the Civil Right's Movements, it was difficult to ascertain the author's purpose in the meandering trials of the Quinn siblings. This could be in part due to my lack of emotional connection with Tangy and her family. The book definitely makes me want to do more research and read more about families in the South during the Civil Right's Movement.

This book was so well written and thought out! I felt like I was right there with the characters. I felt the pain the worry and the little bit of happiness they were afforded. Generally I try to limit my books that include black trauma but I would recommend this to EVERYONE.

4.5*. Beautifully written - heartbreaking story that felt like a real life drama being told out from experience. The author grabs your heart and squeezes like crazy. I can’t possibly imagine living with a momma so cruel in a world so cruel. Important read - but hard to swallow.

A book that will stick with me for a long time. The level of abuse and trauma that the main character experienced left me wondering if there was a level of truth to the author’s words. The story is told from the perspective of a young girl Tangie May, one of 10 children growing up in a poor rural Georgia town. As Tangie shares details about her day to day life and the price of being poor, she also reveals the deep seated issues of her mother. In spite the things she and her siblings experience at the hands of their mother, Tangie has an unwavering love for her. The book explores themes of familial love, coming of age in poverty, racism, abuse and manipulation with prose and language that touches the heart. Knowing that the author passed away before the sequel book was completed was another difficult pill for me to swallow. Well worth the read but prepare yourself for the emotional ride.
