This book is clearly the first book from Brandon Sanderson, where the writing is less mature compared to his later works. However, his style still remains the same: everything is slowly plotting in the dark and building towards the crescendo, then important characters and characters that we come to love die, and the last 10% everything happens really fast and all the building up is released one by one, leaving the reader wanting to laugh and cry.

### character

- My favorite character from this book is probably Hrathen.
SpoilerFrom his arrival in Arelon till the moment he died, then buried and respected by his previous enemies is quite a poignant journey. And I think he relates the most to humans in the real world. He has faith, but his logical self and the zealous of others from his religion make him question himself soon after he arrives in Arelon. As the book progresses, he has more and more self-doubt, along with his action in Duladen, making him almost losing faith for a while. In his heart, he believed Jaddeth, but he wasn’t able to reconcile the killing that were brought to those who hadn’t yet believed Him. His ideal was always to save the people by converting them, instead of through force and oppress. And in the end, he finally accepted the truth of his faith, as well as himself. His love development for Sarene was also very touching. This is actually enemy to lover, but it’s extremely subtle and nuanced, and it makes sense.

- Sarene’s character is also well portrayed. She is clever, but she says whatever she thinks and doesn’t care if she may have insulted other people in the process. But she’s also lonely, and her loneliness is something I can relate to because it has something to do with her personality. Overall, it was nice that in the end she found Raoden.
- Raoden’s character is likable, but he kind of lacks depth. He is optimistic and determined, but the book never got too much into why, or what made him who he was. I think a little more story on that would be nice to add to Raoden.

Overall, I am interested to know what will happen next in Elantris.

Intriguing world. Strong message. Wonderful splashes of humor and a  sweet romance that tugged at my heart strings.
