500 pages of backstory for 100 pages of action. Low ratio for good ol' Brando Sando
Elantris was once a great city, full of ordinary people who transformed at random from a mysterious magic that came from the city. However 10 years ago the magic failed, along with it the citizens and the city itself has been cursed and stuck in a never ending decaying state. Raoden, Prince of Kae, is banished to Elantris upon receiving the curse. With it, his newly arrived bride to be is left alone in the capital, believing her husband is dead and playing a very deadly political game with Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon (with a deadline of 3 months, before more "direct" action is taken). Arelon is in a dangerous position, facing a catastrophe bigger than even the one that claimed Elantis all those years ago....
As I continue my reading journey through the cosmere, I now arrive at the book that started it all, Elantris. I can the see ideas and approaches used in this book that would later impact the cosmere as a whole. Even from his very first book in the Cosmere, there is all the key aspects I have come to expect from Sanderson's stores. A well written magic system. Heavy but expertly explained worldbuilding. A wide cast of intriguing characters. And of course, a sanderlanche towards the end.
I really enjoyed the 3 POVs we got throughout the book. Each of them were equally enjoyable and it was fantastic seeing each of their reactions to what the others POVs were getting up to. My favourite POV was Hrathen. He was definitely a character I started off hating and praying for his downfall. But the more time I spent with his chapters, the more I could explore this complicated character, who while is not a good man, certainly wants to be, but is unfortunately very misguided in the actions he takes.
If you are like me, and enjoy the political / character drama the most in Sanderson's book, then you will certainly enjoy this read.

I should say that while I was reading this, it felt like a five star. I was sucked into this world, into the characters, into all the political intrigue...but as I got to the end, I realized it wasn't quite up there. I had such a good time with this, don't get me wrong! I even waffled about giving this a quarter or half rating, but i've just decided against it. The problem is that so much of this book is slow enough that I don't think I could recommend it to just anyone, and then the ending ramps up and moves so quickly it felt so out of place and like it should have been in a different book. I like a slow book even, but the disconnect with the last part was a bit too much for me. Not to mention we get quite a few mentions in the last part of other magic and backstory pieces that go nowhere because it's the end.
And yet this blows my mind this was Sanderson's first novel. There is nothing like being absorbed by a good, thick fantasy book, and this book did that for me. His prose is so plain but it does what it needs to, and his characters are interesting and fun to follow for the most part here. I'm so looking forward to moving on in his bibliography because I know he's only moving up from here.
