4.11 AVERAGE

3.5 stars. Normally, in my own brain, this book would not be upgraded to a 4 star, but Sanderson has proven himself over and over again so I gave him the extra boost to 4 :)

This book was a slow moving political beast with some great characters thrown in for good measure. There wasn't much action to speak of in this book, until the end. You got Sarene who is trying to navigate the kings courts; Raoden, who is trying to rebuild a city; and Hrathen, who is trying to convert a city. These characters where a pleasure to read about. The book was set up Raoden chapter, Sarene chapter, and Hrathen chapter. And the only reason I wouldn't want to read about one character was because a previous chapter ended on a cliffhanger.

I really enjoyed all the political chess pieces being played in this book. It was quite interesting and at times exciting, but I was never on the edge of my seat. The magic system was
Spoiler very interesting, but since we didn't get to really deal with any magic at all until the end of the book it was a little underwhelming.
. I'm excited to learn more about it in [b:The Emperor's Soul|13578175|The Emperor's Soul (The Cosmere)|Brandon Sanderson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1659906200l/13578175._SY75_.jpg|19161502] and [b:The Hope of Elantris|10852065|The Hope of Elantris (Elantris, #1.5)|Brandon Sanderson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1661025414l/10852065._SY75_.jpg|15766814], which I will get to soon.

I'm gonna finish with a spoiler. If you don't want to ruin the ending definitely don't read it.
Spoiler At some point, not far into the book, I started rooting for Hrathen. I wasn't rooting for him because I wanted him to convert everyone to Derethi, I was rooting for him because I knew that deep down he wasn't a psycho, like Dilaf. I spent a good portion of the book waiting and hoping for this to happen. He is one of those characters that I just can't help but enjoy, super intelligent and some redeemable quality even though he is supposed to be bad. And I'm a sucker at rooting for redemption. Well he got his chance and he turned away from the dark side!! I was excited! I became even more excited for The Hope of Elantris at that moment and future works because I couldn't wait to see where Sanderson took Hrathen. Then he killed him. Hrathen. The guy I had been rooting for, the guy I knew was gonna have a shot at redemption, and when presented he took it. And then he died. Hrathen is one of my favorite characters Sanderson has created. Possibly even second favorite. Kelsier being my favorite. And they both died! It's like I'm not allowed to care about his characters because If I really enjoy them they are gonna die! Anyway, side not: If you like Kelsier like me, go read [b:Secret History|28698036|Secret History (Mistborn, #3.5)|Brandon Sanderson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1659766387l/28698036._SX50_.jpg|48896020] please.
I fell a little better now that I got that out. I hope some of you are able to read that. Just a couple more Cosmere books to go before I'm all caught up!

"It was the contemplative book about a man trying to rebuild society among wretches, a woman who refused to be defined by the roles society heaps upon her, and a priest having a crisis of faith"

Couldn't have said it better than the man himself!

I enjoyed this book and the sentiment behind it more after sitting with it a bit. The pacing did seem a little off. I had a bit of trouble following the magic system but that's probably a personal problem. I did adore our main characters Raoden and Sarene.
I'm so happy they got their happy ending 😭

Second time through and did enjoy! I loved the magic system and the mysteries. I was glad to see Hoid briefly too.

what a fantastic debut novel! I read this after the mistborn trilogy and though the social structure or indeed the narrative of Elantris wasn't as grand or complex as that of the mistborn trilogy, it was still remarkably well thought out.

Over all, a fantastical mystery with likeable characters and a unique magic system. I think I'll definitely re-read this at some point, it's one of the greats.

Powerful and masterfully crafted story, 3-dimensional characters, interesting setup at the dawn of the fall of a society. No threads left untied at the end and everything placed with a narrative purpose. Sanderson at his best.
