Check the content warnings, and take them very seriously!

That said, this book is nothing like I expected it to be. It's a glorious, dark fairy tale.

Without giving too much detail...

All the very best villians are somewhat sympathetic.

Also, the idea that souls can get stuck after death, not just because they have unfinished business,  BUT ALSO BECAUSE SOMEONE LIVING IS UNABLE TO LET THEM GO ... just, wow. My heart hurts in the best way.

I feel like my whole review is going to be a spoiler, so I'll hide it a lot of it just in case. I never write reviews, this was a message to my best friend so this might be rough, but wow. Bruh. Okay. Bruh. This book. This book is amazing, it really is. Well-written, unpredictable, and engaging enough that I just spent the last 5 and a half hours reading it straight through without pause (until 3:30am). HOWEVER. It is very very dark.
It is also incredibly primally evocative creating fear, tension, and disgust by way of bodily fluids (vomiting, mildew, infestations of bugs, a few mentions of urine, and a lot of talk about rot and decay of death and dead things). It really painted a vivid picture in my mind while I was reading, it just didn't evoke pleasant things. I also don't know if I'd classify it with having a happy ending. I'm pleased with the way things turned out. Like I said, it's well crafted and this author did a really good job with character and plot development. I don't think there will be a sequel because it doesn't need one. I would rec solely based on the fact that it is a GREAT book, but you should know the rest of this stuff too before reading. Also, due to magical abilities that play a major role in the plot, non-con is a pretty strong theme throughout this story.

house of hollow is one hell of a strange story. i certainly enjoyed the writing, seeing as i practically couldn't put the book down. the premise is an intriguing one but i'm not sure about its execution and i still have many questions left unanswered.

at the core of this story is the deep, unbreakable bond between sisters. i'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but a lot of the sisters' relationship and dynamic felt really obsessive to a creepy extent? maybe the sisterly bond was over-exaggerated in order to up the creepy factor and mystery, but who knows.

and if they were just wearing the skins of the original sisters, what kind of significance does this information hold anymore? i'm just puzzled because so much of the book was spent alluding to the sisters' strangeness and mystique as the reason for their unnatural beauty.

i'm also not a fan of how tyler, the only major character who was a person of colour, died. it was in such a gruesome and cruel way that i'm not entirely sure is warranted? i don't know man. i just know it didn't sit right with me. he truly deserved better.

which reminds me, why the hell did the author make a 17 year old girl make out with a 20 year old man? tyler is easily my favourite character but come on!!!

in essence, this was a fun read but not without flaws, and i wish certain aspects were done better.

(side note: author seems to be a big fan of the word "fetid" because it appeared like 50 times.)
