Estuvo bien, me enganchó.

enjoyed this one a bit more than the winter king (which i did not like at ALL). cornwell's sort of historical novel is just not for me - his characters are what-you-see-is-what-you-get, devoid of juice and interiority, and the women in particular are frightfully uninspired. i gave the last kingdom a chance because i kind of liked the show adaptation, and now i realise part of the reason it worked better was that the characters appear weightier, more filled in, when they are played by real people (shocking!).

all that said i did not hate the last kingdom. i think it has some charm and humour and lowbrow pulpiness (affectionate) that lifts it up. i also think it helped to listen to it in audio format. the narrator does a pretty great job and it grounds the conceit of uhtred telling his life story by making it feel like you're listening to it in some great ancient hall.

I partially read this book because I enjoyed the TV series but mostly because my husband super enjoyed it and it's fun to chat with him about stuff we both like. It's not generally in my wheelhouse but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. There are 13 books and I'm definitely going to read them all. They're like an anglo saxon war story/history lesson beach read, if there were ever such a thing.

Excellent book. It is a drier book but it plays well into the story and flows very well. Looking forward to future books.
