TL;DR: I got too excited about reading this series and forgot to review them as I went. Copy/pasting what I wrote for [b:The Black Tides of Heaven|33099588|The Black Tides of Heaven (Tensorate, #1)|Neon Yang|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634814752l/33099588._SY75_.jpg|53763120]: Excellent worldbuilding, intriguing magic system, interesting characters. It's a silkpunk bonanza!

for entering into a “silkpunk” series via the last book with a front cover like THAT and written by an author with a backstory like THAT and structure like THIS, I was not expecting a lesbian revenge story

After finishing this series, I can't help but want more. The world Neon Yang created is more clear to me now, and it holds a lot of potential for a full novel, given that a lot of things are left unresolved and this book kind of has an open ending...

Yet another stand-out tale set in Neon Yang's Tensorate universe. This story features Lady Han, a new character, as she gives a drunken monologue describing her relationship with the late Protector. (Very "Dolores Claiborne".) The format is different from the epistolary writing in the previous novella, but it works well here. Lady Han's voice is different from some of the other Tensorate characters, as she provides important backstory and worldbuilding that expounds upon the characters we have already met in previous books. I didn't quite enjoy it as much as #3 (probably due to the lack of monsters) but I would highly recommend this whole series, and I am very hopeful that we will get more additions to this world in the future.

As a work in itself, this is the weakest out of the four novellas so far. As a piece of the Tensorate Series overall, I was into it. I will think of this as an epilogue for the next part of the story. I do miss Akeha and Mokoyoa.

What can I say that I haven't already before? These novellas are so good. Yang is such a great writer. I love how each novella has it's own voice. They even feel like different genres while still being stories set within the same place and roughly the same time. This one follows the story of how Hekate came to power and her lover the Lady Han. I hope she keeps writing stories in this universe because I will certainly keep on reading them!

Once again Yang has written a book in such a unique and interesting style, the narrative almost dims in comparison. Almost. I hope there's more to come in this series.
