Graphic Domestic violence and entrapment. I can't handle this right now.

I need to gather my thoughts but honestly, I hate this story for being so good. It’s downright painful to read but also hard to put down and the ending was everything I could’ve hoped for after the first part. It was rough and heartbreaking and important and unfortunately relatable for a lot of people.
This is not for folks looking for a light read.

Wow, this book. It has a lot of very dark themes in here, but I was absolutely invested in the romance and in seeing Iris get out of a bad situation.

I thought Ryan did well handling the extremely abusive relationship Iris was in, and it didn't surprise me when she mentioned that she interviewed a lot of DV survivors to try and portray their stories well. What did surprise me was some of the places where the recovery wasn't handled as deftly. It was always little things, but it kept jolting me out of the book, thinking "oh that's not a good choice of words" or "why would Ryan have them act like this"? It was still phenomenal and really moving, but I liked the other books I've read by her more for that reason.

Wow, this was a tough, but good book. Kennedy Ryan’s writing is amazing at making you experience what the characters are feeling, both good and bad.

Let’s start off with the good feelings. I absolutely love August West! He was basically exactly what Iris needed exactly when she needed him. They were perfect together, once they were given their chance. I love how the ending talked about soulmates, because they are two characters that make me believe in that idea too. I also loved Iris, especially her character growth in the wake of the suffering she endured.

While this book has a lot of triggering content, I think Kennedy Ryan handled it very well. She brought to life the cruelty in this world, but also offered hope in the wake of that cruelty.

This was an introduction to Kennedy Ryan's prose and I am enamored by how she writes her characters and plot with such reverence.
