Trigger warning ⚠️ :
Graphic Domestic abuse and Rape within a relationship, sexual assault, financial abuse, postpartum depression, and gun violence.

This is a MASTERPIECE. I consider this a slow-paced book in terms of the h and H getting finally together because this's more than just a romance, it's a survival story about women in abusive relationships and the tough choices they have to make to protect themselves and/or their children. You don't get to judge these women on the things they did or didn't do because as Iris said you don't know what they went through
If you’ve never had to fight for your life in your own home, if you’ve never had someone you thought loved you hurt you the most, then you don’t know. But I do. I know how it feels to wake up every day living in a nightmare and sleeping with a monster, and I told the world in my own words and on my own terms.

I felt all the emotions throughout this book, sadness, anger, empathy, disgust, and finally happiness for Iris. She deserves to be happy and safe after everything she went through, luckily our August wants nothing more than her comfort and safety.
I loved Iris so much, she is a very strong woman and mother, she did everything possible to protect her little Sarai and herself.
August is probably my most loved book bf. He waited for Iris for years even when he had some doubts he knew they're meant to be together. He'd protect her and Sarai with his life if that's what it takes to keep them safe and happy.

Some quotes:

After I walk out this door, Iris and I will keep living our lives, going about our business as if these few moments didn’t shake my foundations, but one day she’ll walk away from him. She’s too smart and too good not to.
And when that happens, I’ll be there.

I don’t know what has added dimension to what she was before, but it stirs a hunger in me. Not just to taste her body, but to know her heart. To read her mind and share her thoughts.

"If you were mine, Iris, there would be no doubt what position you'd hold in my life. You'd be center. I'd play you at the five."

I won’t take anything from her. Every kiss, every touch, has to be freely given so I know she’s with me and she wants this.

There were those who stayed too long. Remained when they should have fled.
They did not live to regret it.
In this torrent, this chaos of cruelty, I realize I’ve made the same mistake. I’ve remained when I should have fled.

Sometimes, we stand at a juncture on which our path, our very life can turn. A fork in the road. Sometimes the heart speaks in whispers, and by the time we hear, by the time we listen, it’s too late and we don’t know. We don’t know that we should have turned right instead of left. Chosen one instead of the other. But now, in the retreat of my mind, I know. In my dreams I choose him, my prince, instead of the fraud. In this parallel universe, at this second-chance juncture, I turn right instead of choosing wrong . . . and there, only there, we are together.

I did what I had to do to protect my daughter and to protect myself. That doesn’t make me special, but it does make me a survivor. It’s happening to women just like me and nothing like me all the time. To our neighbors, to our best friends, to our sisters. It’s happening behind closed doors, or even out in the open, documented in redacted police reports or in a million views on viral videos that we judge and poke at and debate.

“You’ve been through so much, Iris. You can protect yourself.”
“But when I’m with you, I know I don’t have to.”
