One of those books that are so awful you can’t stop reading. (Like After)

I loved the experience of reading this book and Kennedy Ryan is easily my favorite author of 2023.
I typically don’t go into books knowing what to expect because I read them based on covers or recommendations so the DV in this book was shocking and incredibly graphic. But I felt so many emotions and I loved the MCs. I loved the description of iris’s new orleanean history,
her relationship with Lotus, how she learned from her mistakes. And I loved how gentle August was with her throughout and also learned from his mistakes. I don’t like the miscommunication trope, and appreciate that Ryan didn’t ruin his development with it.

A powerful and beautiful love story about surviving an abusive relationship and learning to trust again. Definitely very graphic at times tho so read trigger warnings!

I was really surprised by how emotional this book was because of course I didn’t really look at the synopsis before starting it. I expected a fun sports romance and it ended up being so much more. It’s a story about surviving abuse and learning to trust yourself again to be willing to take a second chance at love and happiness, and knowing that you are deserving of those things. Iris and August’s love story begins as a right person, wrong time. They immediately click when they meet and August knows right away that they are meant to be more, but Iris is in a relationship with August’s greatest rival. As time goes by and both men enter the NBA, August and Iris’ paths continue to cross. Every time they meet, their connection is undeniable but the obstacles in the way of them being together are hard to overcome, especially as Iris’ boyfriend starts to reveal a dangerous dark side. Their are heavy trigger warnings in this book for domestic abuse, graphic sexual assault, and postpartum depression so know that going in. This story does have a HEA though, and the love that Iris finally finds in August is so beautiful.

This book had me in so many emotions. So many thoughts. I was upset with Iris but then I felt so hopeless for her. I am glad that in the end she got her happy ending and August was there for her and had all the patience in the world.
