Check the trigger warnings bc it is pretty graphic and I did not and was therefore real surprised and not at all prepared.
At one point the fmc gets raped at gun point (actually several times), she gets beaten, isolated, degraded and basically forced to have her baby and be with her abuser

I gave it 3stars at first but I realised that I was waiting for the book to become enjoyable for most of the book and it only got enjoyable at the 70ish mark therefore 2 stars

This was absolutely heart wrenching, especially the first half oml. I read the trigger warning but I was not expecting THAT. It was so beautifully done and brought so much light to survivors of domestic abuse. I’m gonna need a comfort show after this but one of my favorites, for sure <3

Before reading this book please look at the tw!
I really liked this book and it had potential to be a five star read but it was extremely gory and very disturbing. The explicit scenes of rape and violence weren't what I was prepared for when I wanted to read a romance with a complicated setting.  Maybe thats my fault for not reading through the tw or the publishers fault for not labeling the book correctly. I felt like this book was more about the domestic abuse than about the romance.
I also have some other minors problems with the book, like how the MMC wasn't empathetic enough for my liking. I mean I don't expect him to react perfectly in every scenario but he doesn't even concider to ask her about a lot of things and when he does he's a bit judgy. But the biggest fault of the book were definitely the overly explicit scenes of abuse.

Couldn't focus on the romance because of all the (very detailed) physical/sexual abuse scenes. I’ve read plenty of books that dealt with similar topics but this was too graphic. I didn’t care for the MCs relationship at all… I was too busy being traumatized.

I loved the way Kennedy Ryan emphasized that Iris was a survivor of domestic abuse and that for many people in those situations it’s not as simple as up and leaving.

Kennedy Ryan is able to immerse readers into the reality of abusive relationships and how it can start to the reasons as it continues. Also that for many who try to leave they have been brought back into the arms of the abuser by other people such as the police, CPS, and other institutions. Another thing she brings up is how people shame those who don’t leave and how they didn’t see the red flags and behaviors before.
