yeah it was a beautiful story but it was unoriginal and it was gruesome for the point of being gruesome and not for the point of the story.

I need to gather my thoughts but honestly, I hate this story for being so good. It’s downright painful to read but also hard to put down and the ending was everything I could’ve hoped for after the first part. It was rough and heartbreaking and important and unfortunately relatable for a lot of people.
This is not for folks looking for a light read.

I have to say that this rating is no way the author’s fault. I love Kennedy Ryan’s writing! I just didn’t do enough research on the book before starting it and I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I saw it recommended as a sport’s romance and immediately downloaded it on my kindle. Should’ve looked up trigger warnings first. Still, I found it difficult to connect with some characters because of the dialogue, it didn’t really feel natural to me. Anyway, I do think the abuse and circumstances of the FMC were very well represented and felt very real. I really connected with the book in that aspect, and I feel it is the only romance out there (that I’ve read) that takes the matter seriously and handles it well. Still, don’t be like me and check TW so you know what to expect. This is in no way a fun fluffy sports romance!!!

I went into this book completely blind. All I knew was it was a sports romance.   Honey, this book caught me off guard. Once we met all the characters I was expecting a little love triangle, not Ike & Tina Turner reincarnated.

Caleb...absolute SCUM.
His bodyguard... TRASH
His cousin... WEAK TRASH

I hated Caleb the way people hate Joffrey off 'Game of Thrones'.

August...determined AF to get the girl. I was happy when their pieces finally came together.

Iris -sis was down BAD with Caleb.

I’m glad August waited for her and get got out.  She is one of the lucky ones.

If you told me what this was about, I'm not sure I would have read it. This is a beautiful story with some spice and fun mixed in. It's heavy but I would definitely recommend it.

Wow, this was a tough, but good book. Kennedy Ryan’s writing is amazing at making you experience what the characters are feeling, both good and bad.

Let’s start off with the good feelings. I absolutely love August West! He was basically exactly what Iris needed exactly when she needed him. They were perfect together, once they were given their chance. I love how the ending talked about soulmates, because they are two characters that make me believe in that idea too. I also loved Iris, especially her character growth in the wake of the suffering she endured.

While this book has a lot of triggering content, I think Kennedy Ryan handled it very well. She brought to life the cruelty in this world, but also offered hope in the wake of that cruelty.

Great book but PLS PLS PLS read trigger warnings. I went into this book thinking it was going to be a cute sports romance… BOY WAS I WRONG. This book is so emotional. I was on a roller coaster. I felt like I was screaming for air reading this. I cried so many tears bc I know this is the reality for many women.

I’m conflicted with how I feel about this book, but ultimately I think it’s a miss for me.

In general, there was a lot of “not like other girls”-isms that made me roll my eyes and contemplated DNFing in the first 30 pages. In general I think this book treated most side female characters very stereotypically and negatively.

The abuse:
I knew going into it that this was a book about domestic violence, but I was not prepared for how graphic it would be, nor did I anticipate such brutal rape scenes. I also have a hard time believing Iris would get herself into a situation where she 1) doesn’t even consider getting an abortion (she didn’t seem strongly religious), and 2) moved in with Caleb without her name on ANYTHING. She was smarter than that, it felt unrealistic for her character.

While Iris gets out 60% into the book, I don’t think the conclusion was worth sticking around for. If Kennedy Ryan wrote this book for DV survivors to feel seen, then I think she missed the mark with Caleb dying. Many people will have to live the rest of their lives knowing their abuser is out there.

This book is tagged as a romance, and I did like August and Iris as a couple, but they’re not really that memorable. Their romance is definitely overshadowed by the abuse.
