I've been going on a bit of a Kennedy Ryan discovery over the past couple of days. I read Before I Let Go and This Could Be Us and LOVED both of them. Absolutely adored Kennedy Ryan's writing style. Once I had read those two, I had a friend recommend that I try Long Shot. She had warned me about the TWs, but I honestly didn't think it would be that bad...

This is the most triggering book I have ever read. I didn't really consider myself a person who gets triggered very easily, but this book actually made me feel sick. I had such intense anxiety while reading that it really took away from the reading experience. The graphic detail that Kennedy Ryan wrote with is unlike anything I have ever read... even in my dark romances.

I am by no means saying that it is a bad thing that she included this storyline and these details. I see the importance of it, I say this so that all of you can properly prepare yourselves for what you're getting into. My friend warned me and I still don't think it was enough.

So while I liked this book, it gets a 3.5 because of the reading experience that I had.

I read the warnings but I was still not prepared for what happened in this book.

The night before August's National Championship game, he meets Iris at a bar. They talk about everything and anything and instantly develop a connection. From then on, he was a goner. The next time he sees her he finds out that she's in a relationship with his rival, Caleb. He sees her only a few more times but can't get her out of his mind. To him, she's the one.

“You’re right.” I loosen my fingers from hers so I can hold her face between both hands. “Going to Houston is my best shot at winning a ring.”
“Then why would you—”
“But staying here,” I cut in, caressing the fullness of her bottom lip with my thumb. “Staying is my best shot at winning you.”

“If you were mine, Iris there would be no doubt what position you’d hold in my life. You’d be center. I’d play you at the five.”

AAAAARRRGGGGHHH! AUUUUUUGGGGUUUUST! You're killing me! ❤❤❤

I had a feeling, that August and Iris' story was gonna be similar to [b:Moonshot|55511314|Moonshot|Alessandra Torre|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1601412019l/55511314._SX50_.jpg|47864597] by A. Torre, one of my fave authors. They had to wait for the right time for them to finally be together.

I loved the characters, the writing, the story. A little heavy on the heart though.

whew. this was a heavy read. and so, so incredibly well-written. i feel like reading this right after finishing a book from rina kent made me appreciate the writing in this even more. the elevation was astronomical, really. books like these make me remember just how beautiful prose can really be when the writer actually takes enough time and care with their craft, characters and their stories.

kennedy ryan's writing style is so poetic and mellow. at times emotional, but most of all, absolutely stunning. as is long shot — the first of hers for me, but definitely not the last.

some of my favorite quotes

“If you were mine, Iris, there would be no doubt what position you’d hold in my life. You’d be center. I’d play you at the five.”

“If I could just watch this one in the eye of her storm, in this crisis of her pleasure, it would be enough. God, for the rest of my life, it would be enough.”

“I remember a magical night under the stars, under a streetlight on the eve of greatness. A night filled with laughter and confidences, pregnant with promise. And I see him so clearly, my prince, asking for a kiss. And I do.”

“This moment may die, but this love never will. Time is not a line. It’s a circle, and we, August and Iris, we stand at the center.”

I love how she Kennedy Ryan handle abuse when having a child. I think that the author handle it really well. I didn't know the book was based on a real person that did this thing. I love Iris as a character she was such a strong person even thought she dealt with a not so sweet person. Caleb hated him with a burning passion! Not all sweet people are gold. Loved her cousin. August is such a cinnamon roll human being. Iris had process the abuse that she went with being with Caleb. Learn how to trust again. It deserves  it award!

WOWZA. I was not expecting the dark ass twists and turns this book took me on. The DV within the story was challenging to read sometimes, but written well. Enjoyed this one, looking forward to the next 2 in the series.

Not your typical sports romance and not what I thought I was getting into when I started it. None the less, it was a good read. This story was such a rollercoaster. I hated so many scenes and then loved so many. Physical and mental abuse, rape, power, money, athletes, it covered it all. August- Top star, nba player and such a sweetheart. Iris- pregnant and trapped in a bad relationship with August’s biggest rival, Caleb. Its a raw story that is hard to read at some points. Takes place over several years and it proves that things aren’t always what they seem on the outside.
