for me this book was pretty awful. it was a reread as it’s a book i read when i was 11. i’m not sure if it’s marketed as middle grade but it certainly contains enough detailed references to the main characters sexual desires that i shouldn’t have had it stocked on our primary school bookshelves.
reading it now as a teen it was bland and undeveloped - i think the idea was there (and honestly i’d love to read another better written version of the same book) but it just wasn’t in depth enough for me to get invested in the characters. i mean they’d declared their undying love for each other by the 60th page and this is just book one in a trilogy?!
also a random thing i picked up on, we never find out callum’s (the ghost) age? he’s described as mature and that could mean anything from like 18-30 and if i had to guess i’d have said he was late 20s. the main character is only 16 and parts of the novel did ring some alarm bells for me. i don’t think it sets a good example to children - if he was a person she met online (rather than a ghost) it would definitely veer into grooming territory.
it was funny to reminisce on as a reread but i wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking for something new to get into. and definitely not for an 11 year old!

This was my favourite book at the time and I know that was due to being my first 12 year old exposure to what I considered raunchy writing, but the plot was definitely original and set the bar for my YA endeavours.
