4.5 stars. I usually try look at young adult fiction from the eyes of my teenage self, and teenage me would have loved this. Adult me rolled her eyes, but deep down it thawed my heart. It's a sweet book about young love and the drama that is life when we are young and dumb. If you enjoy books with teen angst, coming of age tales, and first love, then this for you.

I just got to chapter 3 of this and I thought I don’t really like the main character I don’t know if I can really root for her and this is a second chance. However her “ex-boyfriend” isn’t like able. I have a strong feeling that I will rate this book a 1 or 2 stars. So why even bother

This was a such a cute book! I did something I rarely do and actually listened to it instead of physically read it ( I have a thing about that I’ll get into another time) and I’m so glad I did. Carmen is written like a typical 17/18 year old girl and it felt like listening to a friend vent then reading a YA book. There are also lessons about tradition, hard work, believing in yourself and forgiveness—but it doesn’t come across preachy. If you need a fluffy read that has a solid base this is it.

I loved everything about this book. The writing was amazing and the story itself was great but Carmen is just everything that I was at that age and I really enjoyed that. I need more from Monica Gomez-Hira. She is great. I also need this optioned for a Netflix original film.

This was a very cute read. While at times it was hard to listen to Carmen continue to complain without a lot of action being taken, I think that the overall tone was very consistent with actual teenage emotions. This was the second chance at love for the pair of exes, and despite the characters inner reservations they seemed to develop feelings again pretty fast. I also loved getting to watch the antics surrounding being a party princess and prepping for a Quinceañera.
