I enjoyed how short the book was. It was just long enough to get a sense for the dark themes and be left with the message that Mishima wanted to get across. Rikio is completely not self aware due to the mask he needs to wear and warped perception of time he has to live under. This is balanced with a woman who is completely authentically taboo, the person he loves the most. I enjoyed how the book made me feel and the intentional simultaneous mundanity of the language used with how methodical it was, if that makes sense.

A baby but a nice time. Mishima's style again pulls through the translation well, it seems. Certainly not a crucial work but interesting and worth the afternoon or less one might spend on it. There are better ways of getting into YM- I'd point to The Sailor, but I'm not yet broadly acquainted enough to say with confidence. Anyway. He's ridiculously talented and it hurts. Also nice to see Japanese cinema discussed in this way- nicely familiar lately thank you very much for that brief, specific part of your life, Yukio, and no other xoxo
