The plot was much better than The Omen Machine, but for the first time I couldn't get past Terry's prose to enjoy it. He repeats himself far too often, and writes a lot of things that don't need to be written. I think he could have easily cut off a hundred pages and made a better book, which says a lot about the quality considering it's already several hundred pages shorter than his average book.

Did not disappoint. I did take a break from reading this series as the first time I started the omen machine I found it hard to get into. After a break from the story line I found myself drawn back in and I breezed through both the omen machine and this book. I couldn’t put it down!! If you are struggling with the turn of the storyline I recommend a break, but don’t stop reading it!!

Loved the book, just a little to repetitive at times.

Disappointed in the writing. Maybe I read the original series too long ago to remember the style, but the dialog is repetitive and cartoonish. Battle scenes are poorly done.

I was really looking forward to this book picking up from The Omen Machine, but I have to say that I am disappointed. I thought that Richard and Kahlan would be their butt kicking selves, but most of the book the butt kicking is left up to a young sorceress. I was disappointed that Richard was the only main character throughout the majority of this book and the writing was not what I expected after reading the entire Sword of Truth series. The fighting of zombies left a lot to be desired as I expected a much better villain for this book. If I wanted to read about zombies I would read one of they many other books available. I look forward to Richard and Kahlan for the fantasy and strong characters and this book did not achieve either.

Terry Goodkind is by far my favorite fiction writer! I love everything that he writes. This story started out really slow because the setting is really complicated. The characters are lost in a unfamiliar land with unfamiliar ways. I like that the evil people in this book where unlike any of the other evil. They were more focused on their plans. When I hit 60% (I read on kindle) I could not put the book down. I flew through the rest! It was an adrenaline rush. If you have been reading Goodkind be ready for some twist that you are not expecting.

Now I dont want to be unrealistic and say that there were not things that I did not like in the book, but the things that I did not like where the lacking of characters. I wished that Nicci would have been in the book. I mean she is but not really. She is by far my favorite character and I miss reading about her. I hope in the upcoming book we will hear more about her. I miss Kahlan being in control. I feel like Kahlan has been tossed around and confused for the last 5 books. Where is the Kahlan, the Mother Confessor, the woman that all fear, the woman that leads men into battle! To be fair she does come out in the last couple chapters....but I want more!

***If Mr. Goodkind is reading (I know you read some people's reviews) know that I appreciate everything you do for your readers. Thank you for spreading the ideas of liberty and personal responsibility. Thanks for your message you have inspired me and I know at least 10 of my closest friends. I cant wait to read the next book!***

Honestly I don't know why I am bothering with this series. It could be a third of the length if goodkind would just stop repeating the same thing over and over. Does he think his readers are so slow the grasp simple concepts that he has to bash us over the head with them repeatedly?

Took me longer to get through than the previous Richard and Kahlan books. A lot of it seemed more like a set up for the next book, with a lot of explanation and exposition going on about what the Third Kingdom was, the Shun-tuk, half-people, and various other things that feature heavily in the last half of the book. That said, I still enjoyed this book, once I got into it, which admittedly took me some time. Goodkind is by far one of my favorite fantasy genre authors. And I simply adore Richard and Kahlan. Probably two of my favorite fictional characters of all-time. THE THIRD KINGDOM does a great job of setting up the horror and struggle that our beloved characters will have to face in the next book.

Hannis Arc is an interesting and scary villain, as is the addition of Emperor Sulachan (the spirit king), who I think is much more dangerous. I like Samantha, and hope we get to see more of her in the next book. Sad what happens with Cara, and I hope we'll see more of her personal journey of vengeance as well. Kahlan is once again a damsel in distress, though this time, unlike in OMEN, she does get to kick some butt, even if at the end it is Richard who saves the day. They're all just a little too lucky sometimes, but I do think that the Shun-tuk and Emperor Sulachan make for much scarier villains than Jagang and the Imperial Order, as their goal is basically to kill everyone, whereas the Order's goal was enslavement of everyone under their rule and not the end of the world of life.
