So like maybe we shouldn't glorify gangsters...

Listened in audio form. Fascinating. Humanized those behind such evil. Excellent use of multiple points of view.

Riveting look into the life of a wise guy.

Good book, but if you have seen the movie first don't waste your time reading the book. It is basically the exact same. But with that said, Martin Scorsese did an amazing job turning this book into a movie.

Have you ever seen Goodfellas? This is the true story that inspired that movie. The movie The Big Heist was also based on a crime Henry Hill was associated with.

This book is about Henry Hill, who was part of the Lucchese crime family. He played a part in the Air France robbery, murder of Billy Bats, the Boston College Basket point shaving scheme, and most notably, the Lufthansa heist.

Hill was busted for drugs, feared for his life, turned informant, and entered the witness protection program. He helped put Jimmy Burke and Paul Vario in prison.

This book is a mixture of an oral history and narrative. The life some people live! I kept having to remind myself that this wasn't fiction. These people really lived this. Its crazy. The part that shocked me the most were the payoffs, having police and others on his payroll. While Henry Hill was in jail, he maneuvered things to where he could come and go as he wanted. Also the amount of schemes they had going at one time.

Doing research, Hill was kicked out of the witness protection program due to numerous crimes. He has been on many documentaries and interviews telling about his time in the mob.

The book was interesting but there is not personal element. There is no regret or even love for the glory days. I found it interesting seeing how that kind of life changed from the 50s when he entered that life at 11 years old to the 80s when he was busted and turned informant. Its still crazy to me that this story is real.
